Ponce Inlet Lighthouse Vacation

29 June 2009 1,092 views 2 Comments

Daytona Beach is the “World’s Most Famous Beach” with beautiful sunsets and a breathtaking shoreline. But, the Daytona Beach area is also rich with history and Culture. The Ponce Inlet lighthouse, only minutes from Daytona Beach, it is the tallest lighthouse in Florida and the best preserved and most complete lighthouse in the nation.

The Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station was completed back in 1887 when the area was known as Mosquito Inlet. Construction began in 1883 but the lighthouse was rocked by the Charleston Earthquake of 1886. Amazingly the sturdy structure survived and was completed and open for business in 1887. The lighthouse was ultimately automated and eventually abandoned by the Coast Guard in 1970. Naturally, the lighthouse was in desperate need of repair after over 100 years of use. The Ponce De Leon Inlet Lighthouse Preservation Association undertook what became decades of repair efforts in 1972 and today the lighthouse stands proud and tall as one of the best preserved and most complete Light Stations in the Nation. In fact, the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light Station was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998.

For lighthouse aficionados it doesn’t get any better than the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse. It is the tallest lighthouse in Florida and the second tallest in the nation. As a vacation bonus, the Saint Augustine lighthouse is only about an hour away - an easy day trip while you’re on a Ponce Inlet Vacation.

The tower stands 175 feet tall and those who venture to the top of the 203 step structure have a magnificent view of the Atlantic coastline all the way from Daytona Beach to New Smyrna Beach. Ramara Garrett of Waverly Property Group has found hard to find luxurious rental condominiums and homes in Ponce Inlet for her discerning clients looking for an unusual yet historical vacation. For those who appreciate the history of a lighthouse, the lighthouse keepers dwellings and other historic buildings now make up the lighthouse museum. The museum has exhibits open to the public on lighthouse life, Fresnel lens restoration, Florida history and accurate accounts of the lighthouse keepers and their families throughout the life of the lighthouse. They even have an exhibit on shipwrecks!

The Ponce Inlet lighthouse is visited by over 125,000 people each year and is open to the public year around. The museum opens at 10:00 daily with closing time varying throughout the year depending on the weather and other factors. Waverly Property Group has beachside rentals available - sometimes within walking distance of this historic landmark. If you are a lighthouse lover, then this is the perfect hidden vacation destination for you and your family. Let Ramara Garrett and the staff at Waverly Property Group find you the perfect beachside rental close to this grand old lighthouse!
