Rainy day fun in Daytona

21 May 2009 608 views No Comment

Sure, Daytona Beach is one of the brightest stars of the Sunshine State. But despite the glowing testimonials for having hundreds of days of beautiful beach weather, we do get enough rain to keep the gorgeous tropical foliage green.

Usually, a quick shower at the close of a sunny summer day paves the way to a pleasant evening. But occasionally, the rain lasts a little longer and washes away plans to spend the day at the shore. When swimming, playing a round of golf or other outdoor activity is a no-go, that’s the time to explore some of what Daytona has to offer undercover.

Here are three popular possibilities:

1. Museum of Arts and Sciences - MOAS, as it is affectionately known, is a real gem. With both permanent and visiting exhibitions, the planetarium and the collections at this acclaimed institution are worth your time and the modest admission fee. From antique furniture to the best collection of pre-Castro Cuban art outside of Havana, the exhibition halls will fascinate and enlighten visitors of all ages. Fine examples of 19th century portraits, photographs, miniatures and other art work are inspirational. The kids will really enjoy seeing some of the pirate memorabilia and the replica of the giant ground sloth that once called Daytona home. A special treat for the kids is the newly opened Charles and Linda Williams Children’s Museum at MOAS, the only hands-on science center between Jacksonville and Orlando.

2. Shopping at the mall - The Volusia Mall is conveniently located on International Speedway Boulevard, near the Speedway and Daytona Beach International Airport. It has a good selection of anchor stores - Macy’s, Sears, JC Penney and Dillard’s - and most of your favorite mall specialty stores, too. There is no need to look elsewhere when lunch or dinnertime rolls around. The mall has an attractive food court with a nice variety of fare, everything from basic burgers and fries to some of the best Cajun delicacies this side of New Orleans!

3. Skating through the day - What could be a better way to spend a rainy summer day than on ice? The Arctic Zone Ice Rink in South Daytona is a fun place to cool off and get some exercise. For those who prefer wheels to blades, Skate City Daytona Roller Skating Rink in Daytona Beach and Skate & Shake in Ormond Beach have rental skates and public sessions that should fit you to a tee.
